O ex-guarda redes tinha 47 anos e a 21 de dezembro sofreu uma paragem cardíaca na República Checa, onde nasceu, tendo sido transportado para o hospital e colocado em coma induzido. Já na altura o seu representante, Steve Wraith, tinha revelado que a situação do ex-jogador do Newcastle era «crítica».
O checo representou também as cores do Banik Ostrava, Sheffield Wednesday, Brescia, Cosenza, Portsmouth e do West Ham, além da sua seleção. Passou pelo Beira-Mar entre 2004 e 2006 e regressou ao Newcastle, onde já tinha estado entre 1991 e 1998, para terminar a carreira em 2007.
As reações ao desaparecimento de Srnicek não se fizeram esperar, de antigos jogadores e de clubes, sobretudo a partir de Inglaterra:
